The Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) has called for concerted efforts amidst deeper reflection and commitment in the upliftment of Nigeria’s Sports development.
SWAN President, Mr. Isaiah Benjamin, in a message to mark the beginning of Lent and Ramadan fast in the country, through the Association’s Secretary-General, Amb. Ikenna Okonkwo, noted that the season require that Christians and Muslims, join forces in praying for a more prosperous nation.
He urged stakeholders within the Sports sector, including the teeming Sporting Media to use this period to rededicate themselves to better service for all.
“What a remarkable way to be part of this year’s fasting with Muslims and Christians beginning on the same day. No doubt, the fasting season is divinely arranged and offers a great opportunity for Nigerians to pray for the country, especially for the socio-economic, and sporting issues. Globally, Sports has become a big economic deal, contributing to individuals, families and many countries’ rapid development, meaning sports contribution to the GDP keeps growing.
“As we stay on the blessed month of Ramadan and the Lent, I enjoin all of us to remain committed in supporting in any way possible in ensuring Nigerian sports enjoy a more robust and enhanced measures geared towards needed growth and development.
“Ramadan and Lent fasting season is a period of reflection, restraint, and renewal. So, the need to explore in line with spirit of the season has become apt,” he said.
The number one sports writer also expressed optimism that with the renewed vigour and approach by the leadership of the National Sports Commission (NSC), anchored by the Chairman Malam Shehu Dikko and Director-General Hon. Bukola Olapade, especially in the area of sports infrastructure template as well as heightened Nigeria’s competitive advantage globally, hope abound for greater things to come.
